Memphis Centered: Queer Southern Stories

There is a rich and nuanced intersection of queer identities with southern culture, politics, and geography. On this National Coming Out Day, we are reflecting on oral histories of queer community and resiliency by bridging the gap between lived experiences and academic research. This LGBTQ History Month event presents the research contributions of queer southern stories preservation from: Mairead Kearns ‘25, Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies Fellow; Trinity Williams ‘25, Turley Fellow; Vaniel Simmons ‘24, Lainoff Fellow

Please join us Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Blount Auditorium, Buckman Hall, to experience these stories. These presentations will focus on “People in Search of Safe and Accessible Restrooms” (PISSAR), activism and queer identity, and Rhodes College LGBTQ History. Join us for a dynamic evening of discussion and celebration of queer lives in Memphis and the Mid-South.

Co-sponsors: The Lynne & Henry Turley Memphis Center for Community Engagement and Department of History
