The Civic Learning Designation identifies courses and structured co-curricular experiences aligned with the BW Civic Learning ULO. In the future this designation will replace the current "S" designation.

Civic Learning Outcome
BW students demonstrate civic knowledge, skills and values needed to become ethical, informed, and engaged members of local, national, or global communities.

ULO components:  The Civic Learning ULO specifically ensures exposure to and exploration of:

  • Civic contexts (Knowledge of history, as well as democratic, social, economic or political structures)
  • Information Literacy (The ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively and responsibly use and share that information for the problem at hand.)
  • Civic identity (reflection on one's sources of identity and their influences on civic values, assumptions and sense of responsibility within community)
  • Civic Inquiry and Disciplinary Lens (knowledge of ways in which one’s academic discipline can address and is impacted by contemporary or enduring civic issues)
All courses and co-curricular experiences seeking Civic Learning Designation must demonstrate a depth of exposure within the Civic Identity component of the ULO, as well as 1 additional component.

  • Civic Learning Courses
  • Civic Learning Courses with Community Engagement (+ addition of experiential service or other form of community engaged learning within the course)
