Application for study abroad and overseas mobility grant

It is important that you understand the implications of studying abroad during your degree and how to make a success of the opportunity. Make sure you take a look at our website for all of the essential information you will need. Please make sure you read and understand the information provided before submitting your application.
I have read and understood the essential information and I'm happy to proceed with my application. *
If you feel that you need further information and guidance please contact your academic exchange advisor or the Plymouth Global team.
Please read the conditions that apply to taking part in an academic exchange before completing this form. *
To be selected for participation in the University of Plymouth exchange programme you must:

1) be in good academic standing without academic or other offences on your university record
2) successfully complete all components of your stage prior to your exchange. Failure in any module will disbar you from participation in your exchange
3) not be a University of Plymouth debtor, including library fines and/or other incidental dues.

Treatment of marks achieved on your exchange programme
In all circumstances, progression to your final stage requires the successful completion of the agreed number and level of host institution credits equivalent to those required for successful completion of a full-time programme at the University of Plymouth.

Where your period of study abroad is optional marks awarded by your host institution will not contribute to your overall degree classification.

Host institution admission
You will be required to complete a separate application for admission to your host institution.

For any visa application your host institution will require proof that you have the means to support yourself financially whilst on exchange. Any or all of the following documents may be required:

1) letter of financial guarantee (usually a signed letter from your parents confirming that they will underwrite your costs whilst on exchange)
2) bank statement
3) other proof of financial support (e.g. maintenance loan payment schedule).

By signing the Declaration and Approval at the end of this application you and your academic exchange advisor confirm that you accept these conditions.
The deadline for submission of completed applications is 15 February.
You may find our tips for completing your application helpful.

Personal statement

Please write a thoughtfully prepared, error-free statement of no more than 500 words explaining your reasons for wanting to study abroad. Make it interesting and individual, using the following format if you wish:

1) introduce yourself
2) give your reasons for your choice of host and country
3) say what your academic goals are for studying abroad and for integrating into your host’s culture
4) describe specific situations from your past (e.g. coursework, job experience, travel, intercultural experience) that will help you to accomplish these goals.

Academic programme sheets

Choose only host universities whose course catalogues allow you to compile programmes of study complementary to the programme you would otherwise follow at the University of Plymouth, thereby preparing you properly for your final year. You must do this in consultation with and the approval of your academic exchange advisor (or your Programme Leader) and, if applicable, minor subject pathway tutor.

Take a look at our academic exchange advisor webpage if you're unsure who to speak to.

Overseas mobility grants

Grant support may be available for current students and recent graduates* for overseas mobilities (work or study) that last between 4 weeks and 12 months and are linked to your degree. The grants are to support the worldwide mobility of participants and vary according to the country of your mobility and your personal circumstances. Grants will be awarded according to need with priority being given to those that most need the support.

Supplementary financial support is available to participants from disadvantaged backgrounds and groups underrepresented in overseas mobility (documentary evidence required**).

If this applies to you please select all relevant categories.
Disadvantaged background
Groups underrepresented in overseas mobility.

Evidence of formal approval of your mobility is required for you to qualify for consideration for an overseas mobility grant. This is:

Study: receipt by the Global Opportunities team of your approved Study Abroad application form
Placement year work: Placement Team approval of your mobility
Vacation work: a signed confirmation of your placement from your placement provider.

The Overseas Mobility grant is not meant fully to fund your mobility abroad and you are still entitled to any current financial support that you get from Student Finance. If you need any assistance or have any questions about this, please contact the Student Funding Unit.
* A Recent Graduate is a participant who carries out and completes their mobility within one year of their graduation, including any mobility undertaken before graduation. The point of graduation is when you are told that you will be awarded your degree. Applications must be made whilst you are still enrolled

** Evidence such as a letter from a relevant statutory authority verifying your status e.g., your Maintenance Loan letter confirming your eligibility to receive the maximum loan, UC award letter, SEN statement
